A Day in the Life of a Supermodel

The life of a model isn’t easy. Daily meetings, constant photoshoots, strict diets and exercise regimens are par for the course in the world of modelling. It’s not always as glamourous as it seems.

All models have different routines depending on what works best for them and what they have planned for the day, but here is a look at what a day tends to look like for the world’s top models.

When Do Models Wake Up?

Models tend to wake up early at around 6:30am – 7am. If they have an event planned or need to travel/work, they may need to get up earlier.

Model Kendall Jenner is said to get up around 6:30am, while Gigi Hadid gets up at around 7am. Georgia Fowler says she gets up around 5am on a work day, or a little later on her days off.

What Do Models Eat for Breakfast?

Breakfast depends entirely on the model – some love a fueling, protein-filled breakfast while others prefer something small. It also depends if they are working out that day. A gruelling workout will require a more protein-filled breakfast to help repair muscles and give them energy. Most models do not cut out whole food groups, but many do limit the amount of carbs they eat.

A model’s healthy breakfast can look something like this:

  • Eggs, avocado and spinach
  • Oatmeal
  • A green smoothie
  • Avocado toast
  • Greek yoghurt with fruit
  • Grapefruit with a sprinkle of cinnamon
  • Apple cider vinegar shot followed by a protein shake

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help You Lose Weight?

A lot of models like to have a glass of water with a shot of apple cider vinegar in each morning. Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t to help them lose weight. Models take this because it is thought to help improve digestion, help stabilise blood sugar and supposedly helps you feel fuller for longer.

It’s important to remember that there is no safe way to lose a lot of weight in a short time frame. Models have slender frames because of a combination of good genetics, clean diets and exercise routines.

What Do Models Do On Their Days Off?

Many models claim to start their day with exercise or some form of meditation. Yoga is a popular workout as it combines both physical and mental exercises. Models love a range of exercises and each chooses an exercise that works for their individual body type. Many choose to work with a personal trainer.

Exercises that models love include:

  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Spin class
  • Weights
  • Barre class
  • Resistance training (using a band)

Some models have their breakfast before they workout, while others prefer to have it after.

Models love to get massages and facials on their days off to help ease any aches from working out and to keep their skin looking fresh and radiant.

Barre includes ballet-inspired moves to help tone muscles

Do Models Work Out Every Day?

Some models claim to work out up to twice a day, 7 days a week leading up to a runway show or important event like Paris Fashion Week. However it is not a long-term thing; many try to work out up to 5 times a week if they can squeeze it in, but they don’t beat themselves up if they’re unable to make a session.

It’s a good idea to take rest days as the body needs time to recuperate after working out. Muscles are able to become leaner when we give them time to heal; you can cause damage if you do too much exercise without allowing the body to rest.

Working out 4-5 times a week is more than enough for most people. Models tend to do two sessions of cardio a week with the rest being some sort of strength/conditioning/weight training, depending on what they prefer and what works best for them.

What Do Models Do During a Work Day?

Exercise is a vital part of their work as they must continue to maintain their physiques. A gym session nearly always features in a models day-to-day schedule. They may struggle to fit in food, so many tend to carry around healthy snacks to keep them fuelled and prevent them grabbing a portion of unhealthy convenient food.

A model may have castings via their agency or a brand interview to attend. If they are already signed to work with someone, they may need to attend a meeting or fitting. There can be a lot of travelling and rushing around involved. They will likely spend a lot of time jumping in and out of taxis or using the subway to get from destination to destination.

They may need to see a makeup artist or hairstylist to try out a certain look for a job. They may need to meet with a photographer or some top designers.

Models can get back quite late on a workday, so many of them prefer to eat out in the evening or grab a healthy takeaway. Fortunately there are plenty of healthy takeaway options in major cities; a lot of them love sushi.

Do Models Have Cheat Days?

Models love to eat healthily because it’s a part of their lifestyle, but like all of us they do love to splurge occasionally.

They believe everything can be enjoyed in moderation. Bella Hadid famously loves burgers and pizza,Taylor Hill loves Chinese food, and Joan Smalls says she loves macaroni and cheese. The Victoria’s Secret models love to treat themselves after a show.

How Much Water Do Models Drink?

Models love to drink lots of water. This is because water flushes out toxins and keeps skin and hair healthy. A bottle of water is one of a model’s necessities and will always be seen in their model bag.

Most try to drink 2 litres of water a day. It’s important not to drink any more than that as it is possible to drink too much water.

Before a show, many models will decrease the amount of water them consume in order to make their skin contract around their muscles and make them appear leaner.

What Time Do Models Go to Bed?

The time a model goes to sleep varies on a number of factors including what time they got up, how hectic their day was, what time they need to be up in the morning etc. Generally speaking, models tend to go to bed between 9 pm and 11 pm.

How Many Hours Do Models Sleep?

We all need varying amounts of sleep. Some people can exist happily on 6 hours, while others need a solid 8+ hours. Not only are our bodies different but our schedules vary and the amount of sleep you need may be affected by the quality of your sleep and how busy your day is.

It is recommended to try and get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, and all top models appear to aim for this. Models tend to work long days so sleep is vital.

Getting enough sleep is vital for a number of reasons:

  • Reduce your risk of getting ill
  • Reduces eye bags and keeps skin looking healthy
  • You’ll feel better and have more energy
  • It helps prevent weight gain
  • It can increase exercise performance
